Preschool Program
Ages 2 – 5
Little Village is a developmental preschool based on the idea that children learn best through play. We offer opportunities for growth by providing a rich environment. Our teachers carefully plan play areas to promote academic and social growth. Projects are process-oriented, not product-oriented since it is in the creation process that children learn to experiment with materials.
Yellow Room
Ages 2 - 3
In the Yellow Room, children are being introduced to school for the first time. They are exposed to building trust with new teachers, sharing a space with other children, learning how to share and take turns, learning how to transition from home to school, and following classroom routines. Our teachers partner with families to support children with individualized transition plans for easy drop-offs and assist with the potty training process.
Children may still be parallel playing with peers at this age and starting to develop interest in their friends. There are many opportunities for children to engage socially with one another in our rich, play-based environment.
Hands-on experiences are provided such as painting, drawing, sensory play, dramatic play, building, reading, and much more. Our teachers are infusing the California Early Learning Standards in their weekly curriculum plans. Children in this age group are also learning pre-academic skills such as letters, numbers, colors, and shapes while they play.
Blue Room
Ages 3 - 4
In the Blue Room, children are beginning to engage in more cooperative play. They are moving from the parallel play stage of social development to more engaged play with friends where they are making plans, collaborating and cooperating towards a common goal in their play. Children in this age group are also establishing autonomy and becoming more independent in their self-help skills.
Curriculum in this class includes play-based, hands-on lessons on pre-academic skills such as learning colors, numbers, letters, shapes and much more. Our teachers observe children in their play and plan curriculum based on their interests as classroom lessons are child led and infused with the California Early Learning Standards.
Red Room
Ages 4 - 5.5
In our Pre-Kindergarten class, children are working on their social/emotional and academic skills as they prepare to move on to Kindergarten upon completing a year in the Red Room. In this class, the children are working on very intentional lessons in an emergent, play-based environment. Children are also learning independence skills, working on their self confidence to do and try new things, and learning how to resolve conflict with peers when needed.
Children in this age-group participate in small group instruction with a teacher to prepare them for Kindergarten. Some of these lessons include learning how to hold a pencil with correct grip, learning how to write their first name, how to draw a self-portrait, recognizing letters and sounds, numbers, colors, shapes, etc. The small groups are hands-on, engaging, and play based. Children also engage in daily Circle time activities where their teachers read books to them on many topics, engage in their weekly unit discussion, participate in group games or music and movement, and learn to sit for an extended period while maintaining focus on their teachers and peers.
